Gujarat Takes Historic Step Towards Uniform Civil Code, Forms Five-Member Committee

na

In a groundbreaking move, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has announced the formation of a five-member committee tasked with drafting the state's own Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Headed by former Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Desai, the committee is set to submit its report within 45 days, after which the state government will decide on the next course of action.

At a press conference with Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, CM Patel emphasized that this decision aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of ensuring equal rights for all citizens, regardless of religion or community. The formation of the committee is also seen as a step in line with the Central government's broader push for a nationwide UCC.

The five-member committee includes:

  • Justice Ranjana Desai (Retired Supreme Court Judge) – Chairperson
  • CL Meena
  • RC Kodekar
  • Dakshesh Thakar
  • Geeta Shroff

The move is seen as a significant step towards achieving equality, with CM Patel affirming that Gujarat is fully committed to the implementation of the UCC, in line with PM Modi’s vision on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution.
