The impeachment motion filed by Opposition Members of the Rajya Sabha against Justice Yashwant Varma of the Allahabad High Court has not been admitted in the Upper House, according to sources cited by NDTV. The motion was related to the recovery of large amounts of cash allegedly found at the judge's residence in Delhi earlier this year.

A new government-backed impeachment motion is now expected to be introduced in the Lok Sabha instead.

This comes shortly after the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who had accepted the Opposition’s motion before stepping down. His decision had reportedly caused friction with the central government, which is believed to have objected to the acceptance of the motion.

In parallel developments, Justice Yashwant Varma has approached the Supreme Court, challenging the findings of an internal judicial inquiry committee that held him accountable in the cash recovery case.
