Indian Railways is preparing to introduce nine new Amrit Bharat Express trains to strengthen long-distance rail connectivity from West Bengal and Assam. The proposed services are aimed at providing affordable and faster travel options, especially for passengers from eastern India.
According to railway officials, the new trains will pass through heavily populated states such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, offering better travel access to lakhs of passengers. These routes will also connect distant regions like Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, helping create a direct rail link between eastern, northern and southern India.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared information about the proposed routes on social media, indicating that the expansion of Amrit Bharat Express services is part of the government’s plan to improve budget-friendly long-distance travel. However, the Railways has not yet announced when these new trains will be launched.
Among the proposed routes are services connecting Guwahati to Rohtak, Dibrugarh to Lucknow, and New Jalpaiguri to southern cities such as Nagercoil and Tiruchirappalli. Other planned routes include Alipurduar to Bengaluru and Mumbai, as well as multiple long-distance services from Kolkata to key destinations like Delhi, Banaras and Chennai suburbs.
The Amrit Bharat Express trains were first introduced in December 2023. Since then, around 30 such trains have become operational across the country. These trains are non-AC sleeper services designed to offer better comfort than regular passenger trains while keeping fares affordable.
