Indore Tragedy: 'Leaders Enjoy Bisleri, Citizens Left To Die,' Uma Bharti Seeks Strict Punishment For Water Deaths

Senior BJP leader Uma Bharti has launched a sharp and emotionally charged attack on the Madhya Pradesh administration after a deadly outbreak linked to contaminated drinking water claimed 15 lives and left over 1,000 people ill in Indore within just three days.

In a veiled but scathing criticism, Bharti accused those “sitting comfortably on chairs” of failing to ensure the most basic necessity for citizens — safe drinking water — while allegedly enjoying bottled mineral water themselves. Without naming individuals, she said the tragedy exposed a cruel contrast between power and public suffering.

Reacting strongly as the death toll rose on December 31, Bharti rejected the idea that compensation could substitute accountability. The state government had announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh to families of the deceased, but Bharti said no amount of money can compensate for the loss of human life caused by administrative negligence.

Taking to social media platform X, Bharti described the incident as a “deep stain” on governance in Madhya Pradesh, especially painful because it occurred in Indore — a city repeatedly celebrated as India’s cleanest. She questioned how such a massive failure of basic infrastructure could happen in a city that prides itself on hygiene and civic management.

Calling the situation “shameful,” Bharti said it was horrifying that residents of a so-called model city were forced to consume water so unsafe that it turned deadly. She demanded either repentance or punishment for those responsible, asserting that such a grave sin cannot be brushed aside with explanations or apologies.

Expanding the scope of responsibility, Bharti said the blame does not rest only with local authorities. According to her, the mayor, administration, and the entire state machinery must answer to the public for this failure and be held accountable.

Bharti also clarified that she could not address the media in person as she recently underwent surgery on her right eye. Doctors have advised her complete rest, avoiding mobile phone use, sunlight, dust, and public interactions for at least a week.
