Jaipur district has witnessed a sweeping overhaul of its electoral rolls after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), leading to the removal of more than 5.36 lakh voters across all 17 Assembly constituencies. The scale of the revision is such that nearly one out of every nine voters in the district has been excluded from the newly released draft voter list.
The draft rolls were published by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday, triggering widespread discussion and concern among political parties and voters alike. Election officials clarified that the deletions were carried out for reasons including migration, deaths, and multiple or duplicate registrations.
In addition to the removals, a significant number of voters—around 1.90 lakh—could not be linked with the 2002 voter database. These individuals have now been placed in a special category and will be required to establish their eligibility by submitting prescribed documents to prove citizenship.
The impact of the revision has been particularly pronounced in Sanganer, the Assembly constituency represented by Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma. The draft list shows that 61,674 voters, amounting to about 16.46 per cent of the electorate, have been removed from this single constituency. Another 24,465 voters in Sanganer remain unmapped. Prior to the revision, the seat had a total electorate of 3,74,735.
Among all constituencies in Jaipur district, Civil Lines recorded the sharpest drop. Nearly one-fifth of its electorate—49,474 voters or 19.85 per cent—has been deleted from the draft list. At the other end of the spectrum, Chomu emerged as the least affected constituency, with just 8,806 names removed, representing 3.42 per cent of its voters.
Election authorities have initiated the claims and objections process, allowing citizens whose names are missing, deleted, or incorrectly recorded to approach the respective Returning Officers. Voters have time until January 15 to submit their claims and objections, after which verification and hearings will be conducted before the final voter list is published.
Before the SIR exercise, Jaipur district had a total of 48,23,379 registered voters. Following the deletion of 5,36,276 names—roughly 11.12 per cent—the draft rolls now list 42,87,103 voters.
