The tragic train accident in Maharashtra's Jalgaon district on Wednesday evening has claimed the lives of at least 12 passengers and left around 35 injured. The accident occurred near Pardhade station, close to Pachora, when passengers of the Mumbai-bound Pushpak Express stepped down onto the tracks and were run over by the Karnataka Express, which was approaching on an adjacent track.
The Pushpak Express had halted after someone pulled the emergency chain due to rumors of a fire onboard. Central Railway's chief spokesperson, Swapnil Nila, stated that the accident was worsened by the curvature of the tracks near the site, which impacted visibility for the Karnataka Express.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to express his condolences and assured all necessary assistance to the victims and their families. President Droupadi Murmu also conveyed her heartfelt condolences, offering prayers for the deceased and wishing a speedy recovery for the injured.
The Railways has announced ex gratia compensation of ₹1.5 lakh for the injured passengers. Additionally, CM Devendra Fadnavis stated that ₹5 lakh will be provided to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
Railway officials and senior Central Railway management, including General Manager Naresh Lalwani, visited the accident site to assess the situation and coordinate relief measures. Local hospitals, including Pachora Civil Hospital, are treating the injured, while those with minor injuries have been discharged.
The incident has raised concerns about passenger safety and adherence to protocols during emergencies. Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the rumors of fire and subsequent chain-pulling, which resulted in passengers stepping onto the tracks.
This tragedy highlights the need for heightened awareness among passengers and better coordination during emergencies to prevent such incidents in the future.
