A fresh political storm has broken out in Gujarat after Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal made a controversial remark during a community event in Bhavnagar. While addressing a mass wedding ceremony organised by members of the Veer Mandhata Koli community, Kejriwal referred to Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli as a “son of the Koli community,” a statement that immediately triggered sharp reactions across political circles.
The comment quickly drew attention because Kohli, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, comes from a Punjabi Khatri family and was born and raised in Delhi. The apparent mix-up between “Kohli” and “Koli” became the centre of debate, with rivals accusing the AAP chief of making inaccurate statements at a sensitive public gathering.
The controversy soon reached the Gujarat Assembly, where the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party launched a strong attack. Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi publicly criticised Kejriwal’s remark and took a swipe at AAP’s Gujarat leadership. He indirectly targeted AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava, suggesting that he should clarify the matter to his party chief. BJP leaders alleged that the statement reflected a lack of understanding of Gujarat’s complex social structure and accused AAP of making calculated remarks aimed at influencing specific communities.
The Koli community holds significant political weight in Gujarat and is considered an influential voting bloc in several regions of the state. Political analysts say that community outreach events are often closely watched, especially ahead of elections, as parties attempt to build stronger connections with key social groups. In this context, even a single statement can rapidly escalate into a larger political issue.
Opposition voices argued that the controversy may have arisen either from a simple factual error or from an attempt to draw a symbolic link during a community-focused programme. However, critics maintained that public figures, especially national leaders, are expected to exercise greater caution while making references involving identity and background.
As the debate intensifies, the episode has once again highlighted how sensitive social identity issues remain in Gujarat’s political landscape. What began as a speech at a celebratory community function has now turned into a full-scale political confrontation, with both sides trading accusations and seeking to gain advantage from the controversy.
