In a significant political development, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde submitted his resignation to Governor CP Radhakrishnan on Tuesday morning, marking a pivotal moment in the state's political landscape. Accompanied by his two deputy chief ministers, Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, Shinde arrived at Raj Bhavan to formally tender his resignation.
Governor Radhakrishnan accepted the resignation and, acknowledging the transition, requested Shinde to continue in a caretaker capacity until a new government is formed. Shinde immediately assumed his duties as caretaker CM, ensuring continuity of governance during this period of political uncertainty.
Shiv Sena leader Deepak Kesarkar confirmed the development, stating, "The CM (Eknath Shinde) has submitted his resignation to the Governor. The Governor has asked him to take charge as caretaker CM, and he has assumed his duties from today."
Speculation Over Maharashtra's Next CM Grows
With the resignation of Shinde, speculation is rife about who will take the reins as the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The Mahayuti Alliance, comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shinde's Shiv Sena faction, and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Ajit Pawar, had secured a resounding victory in the recently concluded Maharashtra Assembly elections, winning 230 out of 288 seats.
The BJP emerged as the largest party with 132 seats, while Shinde's faction of Shiv Sena secured 57 seats, and NCP won 41 seats. The political scene is now focused on determining the leadership dynamics of the new government.
Amidst the speculation, outgoing CM Eknath Shinde issued a message urging his supporters to refrain from gathering at his official residence, 'Varsha,' in South Mumbai, advocating for his continuation as Chief Minister. In a heartfelt social media message, Shinde expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from his followers but requested that they avoid taking to the streets in his support, saying, "I am deeply grateful for the love and support some people have shown by urging others to gather in Mumbai for me. However, I sincerely request everyone to refrain from assembling in my support in this manner."
He further emphasized the unity of the Mahayuti alliance, saying, "Following the resounding victory of the Mahayuti alliance, our government will once again take shape in the state. We contested the elections as a united grand alliance and remain united today."
As the state braces for the formation of the new government, all eyes are now on the upcoming political developments in Maharashtra.
