In a high-energy rally in Mumbai, BJP MLA Rahul Narwekar voiced strong confidence in retaining the Colaba constituency, declaring that the BJP would win the seat ?unopposed? in the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections. Narwekar, who has been renominated from Colaba, predicted a victory margin of 40,000 to 50,000 votes, citing the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA)?s inability to field a candidate as a sign of BJP?s unchallenged dominance in the constituency.
"We will win the constituency unopposed. I do not see any competition," Narwekar said to Lokshahi Marathi reporters at his rally on October 25. ?With just two days left for filing nominations, the MVA is still unable to find a suitable face to field against me.? His remarks came during his procession to file his nomination, where Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was also expected to show his support for Narwekar?s candidacy.
The Colaba constituency, located at Mumbai's southern tip, is not only strategically important but also symbolically prestigious. It houses Maharashtra?s Mantralaya (state secretariat), residences of top ministers, corporate offices, and cultural institutions, making it one of the most prominent seats in Maharashtra. As part of Mumbai South?s Lok Sabha constituency, the area has also been a stronghold for the Shiv Sena (UBT), with MP Arvind Sawant representing it in Parliament.
Historically, Colaba has seen notable political figures, including long-serving Congress leader Murli Deora and his son Milind Deora. Milind Deora switched allegiance from Congress to the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and now serves as a Rajya Sabha MP. This shift has left the Congress without a formidable leader to field in Colaba, adding to the MVA?s candidate crisis.
As MVA remains undecided, the BJP is quickly consolidating its campaign efforts in other key constituencies as well. BJP leaders such as Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis from Nagpur South West and Mumbai BJP President Ashish Shelar from Bandra West also submitted their nominations on October 25.
With the MVA under pressure to finalize a strong candidate for Colaba, the BJP?s confidence appears bolstered. Narwekar's declaration of an ?unopposed? win underscores the BJP?s aggressive stance in Maharashtra, with Colaba being a critical focal point in the forthcoming elections.
