The ruling Mahayuti alliance has delivered a commanding performance in Maharashtra’s municipal council and nagar panchayat elections, securing an overwhelming majority of president posts and leaving the opposition far behind. Final results released by the State Election Commission (SEC) on Sunday show the BJP-led alliance tightening its grip on local governance across the state.
According to the SEC’s consolidated data, the Mahayuti bagged 207 municipal president positions, while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) managed to win only 44 posts. The results underline a clear public endorsement of the ruling coalition in urban local bodies.
Breaking down the figures, the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the single largest winner with 117 presidents, followed by the Shiv Sena with 53, and the Nationalist Congress Party with 37. On the opposition side, the Congress secured 28 posts, Shiv Sena (UBT) won nine, and the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) managed seven.
Apart from the major alliances, smaller registered parties accounted for four posts, while 28 president seats went to unrecognised registered parties. Independent candidates won five posts, reflecting some localised contests outside the main political blocs.
Reacting to the results, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the people of Maharashtra for backing the BJP and its allies, saying the verdict reflects public confidence in development-focused governance. In a message posted on social media, he said the outcome shows strong support for people-oriented policies and promised continued efforts to meet the expectations of citizens across the state.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also welcomed the verdict, calling it a clear endorsement of the welfare-driven agenda of the NDA governments at the Centre and in Maharashtra. He congratulated Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, along with party workers, for the decisive victory.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described the outcome as a collective achievement of both the party organisation and the government. He said the alliance fought the elections on a positive development agenda and deliberately avoided negative campaigning. According to him, voters responded strongly to the focus on past performance and future plans.
Deputy Chief Minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar termed the mandate a matter of pride and responsibility, thanking voters for placing their trust in the Mahayuti candidates and promising continued work at the grassroots level.
