As Covid-19 cases witness a steady rise across the globe, Maharashtra has reported a significant increase in its active caseload — jumping from 12 to 56 within a week — contributing to India’s total tally of 257. Kerala currently tops the chart with 95 active cases and one reported death.
In Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has acknowledged a manageable surge in infections. Dr. Daksha Shah from BMC said, “The situation remains under control,” while confirming that recent deaths of a 14-year-old and a 54-year-old at KEM Hospital were due to severe comorbidities and not directly attributable to Covid-19.
In response to the rise, BMC has ramped up preparedness for potential severe cases, including arrangements specifically for children and pregnant women, as respiratory ailments see a seasonal uptick.
A report from the Union Health Ministry confirmed that the majority of new Covid cases are mild and not associated with increased severity or mortality. However, as a precautionary measure, the Director General of Health Services convened a high-level meeting with key experts from institutions such as the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
Officials reaffirmed that most cases are being managed without hospitalization, thanks to robust surveillance systems like the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme and ICMR’s virus monitoring network.
