Violence erupted in Murshidabad on Thursday during a protest against the Waqf Amendment Act, leading to clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement. The protest, organized by local groups, escalated rapidly as tensions flared over the controversial Act. In the aftermath, West Bengal BJP president and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of using the situation for political gain ahead of upcoming elections.
In a strongly-worded statement, Majumdar said, “It’s all happening because Mamata Banerjee is supporting it as she wants to polarise Muslims to gain votes in upcoming elections.” He further alleged that the CM’s actions were a diversion from the pressing issue of teachers losing their jobs in the state. “She is conspiring to deviate the people from the issue of teachers losing their jobs,” Majumdar claimed, emphasizing the need for the state government to address the employment crisis rather than inflaming communal tensions.
Majumdar also warned that if the situation called for it, the central government might intervene to protect Hindus in the region. “If it is needed for the protection of Hindus to implement Articles 355 and 356, the government will have to implement that,” he added.
Majumdar assured that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is closely monitoring the situation in Bengal, stating, “He is continuously in touch with the leaders of Bengal; he is determined to protect the Hindus of Bangladesh.”
