On Monday, suspected militants ambushed the advance security convoy of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh in Kangpokpi district. The convoy was traveling to the conflict-stricken Jiribam district when the attack occurred. Numerous shots were fired at the security vehicles, prompting the personnel to retaliate. The exchange of gunfire continued near Kotlen village along National Highway 53. According to police reports from PTI, at least one security officer was injured during the ambush.
Chief Minister Biren Singh, returning to Imphal from Delhi, had intended to visit Jiribam to evaluate the aftermath of recent violent incidents. Suspected militants had set fire to two police outposts, a forest beat office, and around 70 houses in Jiribam on Saturday.
This ambush occurred against the backdrop of escalating violence in the area. Tensions spiked on June 6 following the discovery of the body of Soibam Saratkumar Singh, a 59-year-old Meitei farmer who had been missing for weeks. This incident triggered an increase in violence and calls for stronger security measures.
The unrest has also affected neighboring Assam, where around 600 people from different ethnic communities have taken refuge in Lakhipur, Cachar district, fleeing the violence in Manipur.
