In a major anti-drug operation, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), in close coordination with the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), seized 300 kilograms of narcotics worth an estimated ₹1,800 crore in international waters near the Gujarat coast. The high-stakes interception took place during the night of April 12-13, 2025, and marks one of the biggest drug busts in recent times.
According to official sources, the joint operation was launched based on intelligence inputs about a suspicious boat attempting to smuggle narcotics across the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL). When the smugglers spotted the approaching ICG vessel, they panicked, threw the consignment overboard, and fled back into international waters, evading immediate capture.
Despite the mid-sea escape, the ICG was successful in recovering the dumped consignment. The narcotics haul was secured from the water and later handed over to the Gujarat ATS for detailed investigation and follow-up.
Authorities have described the operation as a testament to the seamless coordination between maritime security and intelligence agencies. "This operation demonstrates the high level of synergy between the Indian Coast Guard and state-level enforcement agencies in combating the growing menace of drug trafficking via sea routes," an official noted.
