The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday refrained from issuing a strong response to a controversial social media post shared by US President Donald Trump, in which India and other countries were referred to in derogatory terms.
During the weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal was asked about Trump reposting a letter that allegedly described India and other nations as “hellholes.” Responding cautiously, Jaiswal said, “We have seen some reports. That is where I leave it.”
Trump has once again sparked criticism after resharing content from Michael Savage, an American political commentator and radio host, in which India, China, and several other nations were described using offensive language.
In the remarks that drew widespread backlash, Savage claimed that people from Asian countries travel to the United States in the final stages of pregnancy to deliver children there, alleging that birthright citizenship laws grant “instant” American citizenship to newborns.
Trump also shared the video and transcript of Savage Nation, a podcast in which Savage criticised arguments made before the US Supreme Court over the issue of birthright citizenship, reigniting debate over immigration and citizenship rights.
The Indian government’s muted reaction has triggered criticism from the opposition, with leaders questioning why the Centre did not firmly condemn the remarks.
Reacting to the MEA’s restrained response, Indian National Congress leader Srinivas BV criticised the government on social media platform X, accusing it of failing to defend the country’s dignity and demanding a stronger official reaction.
The controversy comes at a sensitive time in India-US relations, with Trump’s remarks drawing attention not only for their language but also for the diplomatic implications of the Indian government’s measured response.
