Reacting to the impending extradition of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India from the United States, BJP MP Anurag Thakur said on Thursday that this development reflects the Modi government’s uncompromising stance against terrorism and its diplomatic success on the global stage.
Taking a direct dig at the Congress, Thakur said, “People don’t believe Congress anymore and the economy was in doldrums under its rule, and terror attacks were frequent in the country. However, after 2014, Article 370 was abrogated from Jammu and Kashmir and the Modi government made efforts to eradicate terrorism and Naxalism.”
He further credited the present government’s diplomatic and strategic push for securing the extradition of terror accused hiding abroad. “The Modi government has also made extradition of terror accused to India possible and they will be punished as per Indian law,” he said.
Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a Pakistani-origin Canadian national and a close associate of David Headley, is accused of playing a significant role in facilitating the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, which claimed 166 lives. He is being brought to India after the US Supreme Court dismissed his final appeal to stop his extradition.
Officials have confirmed that a high-level Indian team is in the US to escort Rana back, and security arrangements have been made in Delhi, where he will be initially lodged in a high-security cell and produced before the NIA court.
