Prime Minister Narendra Modi has secured a resounding hat-trick of victories from the holy city of Varanasi, comprehensively defeating his nearest rivals. As per the final results declared by the Election Commission, Modi garnered 612,970 votes, winning the prestigious seat by an impressive margin of 152,513 votes.
The Prime Minister's closest competitor was Ajay Rai of the Congress who secured 460,457 votes, while Athar Jamal Lari of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) finished third with 96,017 votes.
With this thunderous victory, Modi has etched his name in the annals of Indian electoral history by winning the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat for a third consecutive term after his triumphs in 2014 and 2019.
Varanasi went to polls in the final 7th phase of the staggered general elections on June 1. The high-stakes battle saw a robust campaign by all the leading contenders.
Modi's win reaffirms his deep-rooted connect with the masses in the spiritual capital, which he has tapped by blending development with religious overtones during his tenure as PM.
The 72-year-old BJP stalwart first contested from Varanasi in 2014, riding on the plank of corruption-free governance and development. His message struck a chord with youth and aspiration classes then and he replicated that success again in 2019 by defeating Shalini Yadav of the SP by a staggering margin of 4.79 lakh votes.
This year too, Modi's image as a tough administrator and India's regional heft seems to have resonated strongly with the Varanasi electorate, ensuring his third consecutive triumph.
As Modi gears up to take oath as Prime Minister for another term, his resounding verdicts underscore his firm grip over India's parliamentary democracy and establishment as one of the tallest and most influential leaders in the nation's political landscape.
