Former Indian cricket captain and senior Congress leader Mohammad Azharuddin has officially taken oath as a Minister in the Telangana Government, marking a significant milestone in his political career. The swearing-in ceremony took place at Raj Bhavan, Hyderabad, in the presence of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and senior state leaders.
Azharuddin, who joined the Indian National Congress (INC) in February 2009, began his political journey with a notable victory in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections from Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad constituency, defeating BJP’s Kunwar Sarvesh Kumar Singh.
Over the years, he has remained an influential figure within the Congress, contesting from Rajasthan’s Tonk–Sawai Madhopur in 2014 and Jubilee Hills in the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections. Though he faced electoral setbacks, Azharuddin continued to play a key organisational role within the party.
His induction into the Telangana cabinet is seen as a move to strengthen the Congress’s appeal among youth and minority communities, while also recognizing his consistent loyalty to the party.
