'My Words Were Not Against Him': Ravindra Chavan Clarifies Remark On Vilasrao Deshmukh After Backlash

Maharashtra BJP president Ravindra Chavan on Tuesday sought to defuse a growing political and emotional controversy after his remarks during a rally in Latur sparked sharp reactions, including a strong response from actor Riteish Deshmukh, son of former Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.

Addressing the issue, Chavan said his comments were misinterpreted and insisted that he never intended to undermine the stature or legacy of the late Congress leader. Describing Vilasrao Deshmukh as a towering political figure, Chavan said his words were meant to draw a political comparison rather than make a personal or historical attack.

“My statement was never meant to disrespect Vilasrao Deshmukh. He was a very tall leader in Maharashtra’s politics,” Chavan said while issuing his clarification.

The controversy stemmed from Chavan’s speech at an election meeting in Latur, where he spoke about shifting political dynamics ahead of the Municipal Corporation polls. His remarks were perceived by many as suggesting that the influence of Vilasrao Deshmukh’s legacy was fading in the region—an assertion that triggered an emotional reaction.

Explaining his intent, Chavan said his focus was on contrasting campaign narratives. According to him, the Congress was appealing to voters largely through the memory and legacy of Vilasrao Deshmukh, while the BJP was seeking support on the basis of governance, infrastructure development, and welfare initiatives undertaken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

He also expressed regret over the emotional hurt caused to Riteish Deshmukh, calling the actor a personal friend. “If my words have hurt his sentiments, I sincerely regret that. There was absolutely no intention to demean his father,” Chavan said.

Earlier in the day, Riteish Deshmukh had responded strongly to the remarks, stating that while words written on paper can fade, the legacy of leaders who worked for the people remains permanently etched in public memory. His emotional message resonated widely on social media and added intensity to the political debate.
