A special train carrying stranded passengers from the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express, which was involved in a collision with a stationary goods train, departed from Dr MGR Chennai Central railway station early Saturday morning. The train resumed its journey at around 4:45 AM after the passengers were left stranded due to the accident at Kavaraippettai Railway Station near Chennai.

Railway officials provided food and water to the stranded passengers during the wait, ensuring their basic needs were met. A help desk was also set up at Chennai Central Railway Station to assist those affected and offer necessary information.

The incident, which occurred on Friday night around 8:30 PM on the Chennai-Gudur section between Ponneri and Kavaraippettai railway stations, resulted in the derailment of 12 coaches of the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express (Train No.12578). The collision injured 19 passengers, though no fatalities have been reported.

Railway officials stated that the accident severely disrupted train movement on the section, leading to the cancellation of two trains and rerouting or diverting more than half a dozen others. Among the cancelled services were the Dr MGR Chennai Central-Vijayawada Jan Shatabdi Express (Train No.12077) and the Vijayawada-Dr MGR Chennai Central Jan Shatabdi Express (Train No.12078).

Following the mishap, the railways swiftly issued helpline numbers to provide assistance and updates to the families of the affected passengers. Efforts are underway to clear the tracks and restore normal train operations on the busy section.
