Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday following widespread violent protests in Kathmandu over alleged corruption and government mismanagement, as per media reports. The resignation came shortly after hundreds of demonstrators stormed his office, shouting slogans against the government.
A private jet has reportedly been placed on standby for Oli, who is likely to travel to Dubai. After stepping down, Oli handed over command to the Deputy Prime Minister, though protesters are demanding the formation of an interim government, dissolution of Parliament, and fresh elections.
The resignations extended beyond the Prime Minister. Nepal’s Agriculture Minister Ramnath Adhikari and Water Supply Minister Pradeep Yadav stepped down, along with several ministers from the Shekhar Koirala faction of the Nepal Congress. Earlier, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak had resigned, taking responsibility for the violent unrest.
The protests turned destructive, with demonstrators setting fire to PM Oli’s private residence in Balkot and vandalizing homes of several political leaders. According to media sources, the houses of opposition leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba were also attacked, alongside the homes of the Home Minister and the Communications Minister.
The violence on Monday left at least 19 people dead and over 300 injured, primarily in clashes sparked by the government’s ban on social media platforms. Following the unrest, the government revoked the ban late Monday night.
Protesters, under the banner of Gen Z Nepal, marched through the streets of Kathmandu chanting slogans such as "KP Chor, Desh Chhod" (KP thief, leave the country) and "Take Action Against Corrupt Leaders." Amid the chaos, the PM had called for an all-party meeting at 6 PM, urging citizens to remain calm.
