Anger has been growing among young Indians, especially Gen-Z, after a protest by Youth Congress workers disrupted a major international technology event in New Delhi. Many youths believe the incident was an irresponsible move that embarrassed the country at a time when India was presenting itself as a global leader in artificial intelligence.
The incident took place at AI Impact Summit being held at Bharat Mandapam. A group of Youth Congress activists managed to enter the venue after registering online and scanning QR codes like regular participants. They initially wore sweaters and jackets to conceal message-printed T-shirts underneath. Near one of the halls in the afternoon, they suddenly removed their outer clothing, displayed the T-shirts, and began shouting slogans against the central government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Delhi Police acted immediately and detained the protesters to avoid any disturbance at the high-profile event. Police officials said around ten people were involved and were taken to Tilak Marg police station for questioning. Legal action was initiated to prevent any law and order situation.
The protest triggered strong political reactions, with BJP leaders accusing the Congress of deliberately creating chaos at an event attended by global delegates, foreign leaders, and top technology executives. BJP MP Sambit Patra, speaking at a press conference, sharply criticised the Congress and claimed the protest was planned to damage India’s international reputation. He alleged that the action was carried out on the instructions of Rahul Gandhi and said the issue went beyond party politics, striking a nerve among young Indians who take pride in the country’s progress.
Several attendees at the summit also expressed disappointment. Participants said the protest spoiled the atmosphere of an event meant to highlight India’s innovation and startup ecosystem. Some attendees noted that guests from across the world had come to the summit and such disruptions sent the wrong message globally. Many urged political parties to keep national interest above protest politics, especially during international events.
At the same time, the Youth Congress defended its actions. Indian Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib said the protest reflected frustration among unemployed youth and accused the government of ignoring their concerns. He claimed the demonstration was meant to highlight issues like joblessness and policies affecting ordinary citizens. A short video of the protest shared by the Youth Congress on social media later went viral, further fuelling debate online.
