All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader and MP Asaduddin Owaisi has called for Pakistan to be returned to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list, expressing serious concern over Islamabad's potential misuse of its $2 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Owaisi alleged that the funds could be diverted to support the Pakistani military and terror outfits operating against India.
Owaisi’s comments came during a public interaction with the Indian diaspora in Kuwait, where he is part of an all-party Indian parliamentary delegation currently touring Gulf nations to rally global support against terrorism. The multi-party delegation, led by BJP MP Baijayant Panda, is engaging with leaders and communities in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Algeria.
Owaisi emphasized that being on the FATF grey list would impose stricter financial checks on Pakistan, thereby limiting its ability to channel funds toward illicit activities. He raised concerns over Pakistan's alleged role in financing terrorism, particularly through hawala and money laundering networks in the Middle East that directly impact India's security.
He also underscored that India, home to one of the world’s largest Muslim populations, does not need lectures from Pakistan on religious representation or communal issues. Owaisi pointed out that Indian Muslims are integral to the nation’s social and political fabric and more sincere in their commitment to peace and unity.
The seven-member delegation includes BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey, Phangnon Konyak, Rekha Sharma, Satnam Singh Sandhu, Ghulam Nabi Azad of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party, and former foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla. The group has been tasked with highlighting India's firm stance against terrorism, particularly in the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad also took aim at Pakistan, accusing it of routinely spreading misinformation about India. Baijayant Panda, meanwhile, stated that India is no longer willing to remain passive in the face of cross-border terrorism and will continue to counter it decisively on the global stage.
