Pakistan has reportedly deployed thousands of military personnel, fighter aircraft and advanced defence assets to Saudi Arabia under a confidential bilateral security agreement, according to multiple senior security and government sources.
The large-scale deployment comes at a sensitive time in the Middle East, with Islamabad simultaneously playing a diplomatic role in efforts to ease tensions linked to the ongoing confrontation involving the United States and Iran.
Sources familiar with the arrangement claimed Pakistan has positioned nearly 8,000 troops in Saudi Arabia along with a squadron of fighter jets and air defence systems as part of a mutual defence understanding between the two countries.
Officials described the deployment as a “combat-capable force” intended to support Saudi Arabia if the kingdom faces further attacks or escalating regional threats.
Neither Pakistan’s military establishment nor Saudi authorities officially commented on the reports. Requests seeking clarification from Pakistan’s Foreign Office and Saudi government representatives reportedly remained unanswered.
According to security officials, the deployment includes around 16 fighter aircraft, largely consisting of JF-17 fighter jets jointly developed by Pakistan and China. The aircraft were reportedly moved to Saudi territory earlier this year.
Sources also claimed Pakistan dispatched drone squadrons and additional military personnel to strengthen coordination with Saudi defence forces.
While some officials described the mission as involving advisory and training responsibilities, others indicated that the scale of the deployment goes far beyond symbolic military cooperation.
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have historically maintained close defence ties, with Pakistani troops previously deployed in the Gulf kingdom under older security arrangements. However, the latest move is believed to be significantly larger in scale.
One government source familiar with the confidential defence agreement claimed the pact allows for the possible deployment of up to 80,000 Pakistani troops if regional security conditions worsen.
Reports also suggested the agreement may involve naval cooperation and the deployment of Pakistani warships, though it remains unclear whether any naval assets have already reached Saudi waters.
The development places Islamabad in a diplomatically delicate position as it attempts to maintain relations with both Saudi Arabia and Iran.
Pakistan has recently played a central mediation role in regional diplomacy and was involved in facilitating talks linked to the US-Iran conflict. Islamabad had also hosted discussions aimed at reducing tensions between Washington and Tehran.
At the same time, Saudi Arabia reportedly intensified security coordination with Pakistan after regional attacks targeted critical energy infrastructure and heightened fears of a wider conflict in the Gulf.
Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had earlier hinted that the security understanding between the two nations included extensive defence guarantees for Saudi Arabia.
