As India prepares to celebrate its 78th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called upon citizens to contribute directly to the shaping of his annual Independence Day address. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, August 1, PM Modi invited suggestions from the public, asking them to share themes and ideas that reflect the nation’s present aspirations and collective dreams for the future.
“As we approach this year’s Independence Day, I look forward to hearing from my fellow Indians! What themes or ideas would you like to see reflected in this year’s Independence Day speech? Share your thoughts on the Open Forums on MyGov and the NaMo App,” the Prime Minister wrote, encouraging every citizen to engage in nation-building through dialogue and participation.
In his outreach, Modi emphasized the need for ideas that speak across generations, aiming for a speech that captures the spirit of a new India while honoring its legacy. This is part of the government’s broader attempt to involve the public in key national moments, making the occasion more inclusive and participatory.
Adding to the citizen-engagement initiative, the Ministry of Defence, in collaboration with the MyGov platform, has announced a major campaign titled “Independence Day Celebrations – 2025”, which includes a series of national-level contests. These contests are open to people of all ages, with a particular focus on youth participation. The aim is to foster patriotic pride, deepen understanding of India's freedom struggle, and encourage creative expressions of national unity.
Participants can submit entries in various categories such as essays, artwork, quizzes, and design competitions. All submissions are expected to reflect the theme of India's journey—its sacrifices, resilience, and achievements—while inspiring future generations to carry the nation’s legacy forward.
This outreach follows the Prime Minister’s powerful 100-minute speech in Parliament earlier this week, where he addressed the success of “Operation Sindoor”, a recent cross-border counter-terror operation. Modi strongly defended the operation, stating, “We have complete trust in the capabilities of our armed forces and they were given a free hand to respond. The armed forces taught them such a lesson that the masters of terrorism are still losing their sleep over it."
He further said, “I stand here to make a case for India, and to show a mirror to those who do not understand this,” asserting that the operation successfully prevented an attempt to incite internal unrest.
Citizens interested in contributing to the Independence Day initiatives can access the Open Forums on the MyGov platform or download the NaMo App to submit their ideas for the Prime Minister’s speech and participate in the various contests. The deadline for entries is expected to be announced soon, as the nation looks forward to the August 15 celebrations with renewed patriotic spirit.
