PM Modi Reaffirms Strong India-US Ties After Trump’s ‘Always Be Friends’ Remark

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday struck a reassuring note on India-US relations, responding to US President Donald Trump’s recent comments about their personal rapport and bilateral ties.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump’s sentiments and positive assessment of our ties. India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.”

Trump, speaking to ANI earlier, was asked whether he was prepared to reset relations with India. The US President replied, “I always will. I’ll always be friends with (PM) Modi. He’s a great Prime Minister. I’ll always be friends, but I just don’t like what he is doing at this particular moment. But India and the United States have a very special relationship. There is nothing to worry about. We just have moments on occasion.”

Trump’s remarks came against the backdrop of his recent statement that the US had “lost” India and Russia to China. His comments gained attention shortly after visuals from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin showed PM Modi interacting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The pictures were seen by many as a subtle counterpoint to Trump’s ongoing tariff war with Beijing.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the enduring importance of New Delhi’s ties with Washington. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, during the weekly press briefing, said, “This relationship between the United States and India is very important for us. Both our countries share a comprehensive global strategic partnership, which is anchored in our shared interests, democratic values and robust people-to-people ties.”

He added that the partnership had successfully navigated political transitions and global challenges over the years, reaffirming that New Delhi remained committed to strengthening cooperation with Washington. “We remain focused on the substantive agenda that our two countries have committed to, and we hope that the relationship will continue to move forward based on mutual respect and shared interests,” Jaiswal said.
