In a strong statement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the Congress party for its neglect of water conservation efforts during its long rule in India. Speaking on the issue, Modi pointed out that Congress viewed government as its "birthright," but consistently failed to address critical issues such as the water crisis in the country.
"Congress governments ruled the country for a long time, but they were always against good governance and never thought about solving the water crisis," said the Prime Minister. He added that, after independence, one of the first initiatives undertaken by the country was the focus on Jal Shakti (water resources), which was a vision that largely went unacknowledged by the Congress party.
Modi highlighted that the true pioneer in India's water resources and dam construction efforts was none other than Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, a fact that, according to the Prime Minister, has often been suppressed by the Congress. "If the credit for the vision of India's water resources and the construction of dams goes to one great man, then the name of that great man is Baba Saheb Ambedkar," he emphasized.
The Prime Minister's remarks underscore his belief that the Congress party failed to recognize or give due credit to Baba Saheb Ambedkar's significant contributions in water conservation and the country's water management systems. This statement also reflects Modi's continued effort to shift the narrative around India's water policies and bring attention to the role of Ambedkar in shaping the nation?s infrastructure.
