The 98th All India Marathi Literary Conference, held in Delhi for the first time in nearly seventy years, marked a historic milestone in the celebration of Marathi literature and culture. The grand event was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and saw the presence of several key leaders, including NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) President Sharad Pawar and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

A Symbolic Gesture of Unity Amid Political Differences

One of the most talked-about moments of the inauguration was the unexpected display of camaraderie between Prime Minister Modi and Sharad Pawar. As the ceremony commenced, Modi held Pawar’s hand while lighting the inaugural lamp, a moment that quickly went viral on social media. Later, after Pawar’s speech, Modi assisted him to his seat and even offered him a glass of water—small yet powerful gestures that resonated with many, given their political rivalry.

PM Modi’s Tribute to Marathi Language

During his address, Prime Minister Modi captivated the audience by greeting them in Marathi. Expressing his deep admiration for the language, he recalled the devotional verses of Saint Dnyaneshwar, reciting a few lines from an abhang (devotional poem).

"Marathi is a complete language that embodies bravery, beauty, sensitivity, and equality. Our languages have never been in conflict but have always influenced and enriched each other," Modi remarked, stressing the importance of linguistic unity in India.

He also credited the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for his early connection with Marathi culture and proudly mentioned that Marathi had recently been granted the status of a classical language. "Over 120 million people across the globe speak Marathi, and I consider it my fortune to have been able to grant it the status of a classical language," Modi added.

Sharad Pawar’s Heartfelt Acknowledgment

As the president of the conference, Sharad Pawar expressed his gratitude towards Modi for attending the event. Sharing a personal anecdote, he revealed that when he invited Modi, the Prime Minister did not hesitate for even a minute before accepting. "This is Maharashtra’s event, a gathering of scholars, and I will be present," Modi had responded.

Pawar further acknowledged the significance of the event being held in Delhi. "After Nehru, it is the second time a Prime Minister has attended this conference in the capital. I am truly pleased to witness this grand celebration of Marathi literature at such a prestigious venue."

Government’s Financial Boost to Literary Event

Recognizing the increased expenses of hosting the conference in Delhi, the Maharashtra government approved an additional ₹2 crore in funding, bringing the total state contribution to ₹4 crore. The event, which runs from February 21 to 23, features a series of literary discussions, poetry sessions, and cultural programs, attracting scholars and literature enthusiasts from across India and beyond.
