Political strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor might soon make a significant electoral move in Bihar. The bypolls for four Assembly seats in the state, which became vacant following the election of their sitting MLAs to Parliament, are seen as a crucial opportunity for Kishor to gauge the popularity of his newly formed outfit, Jan Suraaj.
Kishor, who had initially planned to launch Jan Suraaj on October 2, has been tirelessly traveling across Bihar for the past two years in preparation. His padyatra, which began on Gandhi Jayanti in 2022, has covered an impressive 5,500 km across the state, including visits to 18 of Bihar's 38 districts on foot. The remaining districts were covered by vehicle.
With bypolls slated for Ramgarh, Tarari, Imamganj, and Belaganj Assembly seats?vacated by MLAs who won Lok Sabha seats?Kishor sees this as an opportune moment to test Jan Suraaj?s electoral viability. The seats are significant: Ramgarh and Belaganj were won by RJD, Tarari by CPI(M-L), and Imamganj by Jitan Ram Manjhi?s Hindustan Awami Morcha (Secular) in the 2020 elections.
Kishor has recently indicated that Jan Suraaj might contest all four seats and is hopeful for a soon-to-be-allocated electoral symbol. A Jan Suraaj functionary remarked, ?We view the Assembly bypolls as a valuable chance to assess our standing and to understand regional dynamics, especially in the Magadh and Shahabad regions.?
However, Kishor?s announcement has sparked criticism from anti-BJP parties. RJD leaders have accused him of being a "B-team of the BJP," highlighting his critiques of the Lalu Prasad-led party. Kishor has frequently targeted RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, dismissing him as merely "Lalu?s son."
In recent remarks, Kishor has also criticized Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, accusing him of over-reliance on bureaucrats and labeling his administration as a ?bureaucratic jungle raj.? He has similarly condemned the BJP for allegedly allowing RSS ideology to dominate its agenda.
During his padyatra, Kishor has been actively engaging with Muslim voters, advocating for a united front against RSS ideology to counter the BJP in the 2025 Assembly elections.
As Kishor prepares for this pivotal moment, all eyes will be on how Jan Suraaj performs in the upcoming bypolls and whether it can establish a significant foothold in Bihar?s complex political landscape.
