What was meant to be a grand celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) historic IPL 2025 victory turned into a heartbreaking tragedy, as a massive crowd surge led to a deadly stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, June 4. The mishap claimed at least 11 lives and left 47 others injured, casting a long shadow over the team’s long-awaited win.
The RCB squad, having clinched their first-ever Indian Premier League title, arrived in Bengaluru early on Wednesday to an outpouring of jubilation. But the joy soon spiraled into chaos due to poor event management, miscommunication, and the overwhelming number of fans that descended on the city.
Morning to Early Afternoon: Crowds Begin to Swell
The day began with the RCB players meeting Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at Vidhana Soudha. Even as the morning progressed, thousands of fans had already started gathering outside the stadium. The stadium, which holds around 35,000 spectators, soon found itself surrounded by a crowd estimated at two to three lakh people.
2:00 PM: Entry Gates Flooded
By 2:00 PM, fans had swarmed the 13 entry gates of the stadium, waiting hours ahead of the scheduled felicitation ceremony.
3:00 PM: Traffic Chaos and Confusion
As the clock approached 3:00 PM, streets around the stadium became completely choked. The police force present on the ground was vastly outnumbered. Adding to the confusion, an earlier announcement that only fans with passes would be allowed was suddenly revised, opening the gates to everyone. This last-minute decision triggered widespread panic and a rush to gain entry.
3:30 PM to 5:00 PM: Tragedy Strikes
The victory parade, scheduled to begin at 3:30 PM, further escalated the situation. As the team’s bus made its way from Vidhana Soudha to the stadium, eager fans surged forward. Barricades meant to control the crowd buckled under pressure, resulting in a terrifying stampede.
Many were trampled in the chaos; shoes, bags, and personal items were scattered across the ground. Survivors desperately tried to help the injured, but the situation had already spiraled out of control.
Official Statement and Police Report
In a preliminary report submitted to the Karnataka government, the Director General and Inspector General of Police stated that the tragedy was triggered by an "unexpected gathering of thousands of fans trying to enter the stadium between 3:30 PM and 4:30 PM."
The report reads: “All possible security arrangements were made… however, due to the unexpected gathering of thousands of fans… a barricade was broken, and people fell on each other, resulting in a stampede.”
Government Reaction: Condolences and Compensation
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed deep sorrow over the incident, saying: "The crowd turnout exceeded all expectations... The stadium has a seating capacity of 35,000, but an estimated two to three lakh people turned up. The pain of this tragedy has also erased the joy of victory."
The CM announced ₹10 lakh compensation for each deceased’s family and assured free medical treatment for the injured.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar also issued a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter):
"We are heartbroken by this tragic incident… We did not anticipate such an overwhelming crowd. While the stadium holds 35,000, over 3 lakh people had gathered.”
“Your pain is ours. We stand with our people – in this sorrow," he added.
