Stepping up his attack on the BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday alleged that the ruling party's ideology stands in direct opposition to the Indian Constitution and democracy.
Addressing a public gathering in Ahmedabad, Gandhi said, "Their (RSS) ideology is against the Constitution. They want to end democracy. They want to control all the institutions of India and hand over the country's money to Ambani and Adani."
He further criticised the recently introduced Waqf (Amendment) Bill, calling it a direct attack on religious freedom. “The Waqf (Amendment) Bill is an attack on the freedom of religion and the Constitution,” he said, accusing the government of targeting minority communities through legislative means.
In a particularly emotional part of his address, Gandhi recounted a recent incident involving senior Congress leader and Dalit MLA Tika Ram Jully, claiming that BJP leaders had the temple “cleansed” after Jully’s visit.
"After Tika Ram Jully, our Dalit leader, went to a temple, BJP leaders got the temple cleaned once he left... This is not our religion," he said, condemning the act as casteist and disrespectful.
Rahul Gandhi’s comments come as part of the Congress party’s ongoing efforts to highlight issues of social justice, secularism, and institutional autonomy in the run-up to the general elections. The party has positioned itself as a defender of constitutional values and rights for marginalised communities.
