In a late-night move that has triggered political firestorms across Maharashtra, the state government reassigned key portfolios between two NCP ministers, fueling outrage from opposition leaders and civil society alike. Controversial NCP MLA Manikrao Kokate, who recently came under fire for allegedly playing online rummy during a session of the Legislative Assembly, has now been appointed Sports Minister. The current Sports Minister, Dattatray Bharne, has been moved to head the Agriculture Ministry.

The reshuffle, announced through an official circular signed by Additional Chief Secretary Manisha Verma, has been widely criticized as tone-deaf and politically motivated.

Speaking from Delhi, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule tore into the decision, calling it a mockery of democratic norms.

“The person playing cards in the temple of democracy should have been asked to resign, not promoted. This is the BJP's reward system—disrespect the Assembly, get a ministry.”

Taking a jibe at Kokate's new role, Sule added: “Under Khelo India, young athletes are fighting to build their futures, and the BJP gives the sports ministry to someone dubbed ‘Rummy Rao’. This is dangerous for Maharashtra.”

Echoing the criticism, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said, “Manikrao Kokate doesn’t deserve to be in the cabinet. This reshuffle was done only to shield him. Ajit Pawar is trying to protect his loyalists, no matter the cost.”

Opposition leaders argue that such appointments erode public faith in governance and degrade the dignity of legislative institutions. The viral video of Kokate allegedly playing cards during an active session had earlier sparked demands for disciplinary action from multiple corners.
