Sanjay Roy, convicted of raping and murdering an on-duty trainee doctor at Kolkata’s state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was sentenced to life imprisonment until death by a Sealdah court on Monday, January 20. Along with the life sentence, the court also imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on Roy.
Judge Anirban Das of the Additional District and Sessions Court in Sealdah also directed the state government to pay ₹17 lakh as compensation to the family of the victim. In his ruling, Judge Das explained that the crime did not meet the criteria for being classified as the "rarest of the rare" case, which would have warranted the death penalty.
Roy, a former civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was brought to the court amid tight security arrangements for the sentencing. Before the judgment, the court heard his statement at around 12:30 pm on Monday.
