At least 47 lives were lost and many others were injured after violent weather, including rain, lightning, and hailstorms, struck various regions of India on Thursday. While the storms offered some relief from the relentless heatwave, the sudden downpours led to devastating consequences in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand.

Bihar bore the brunt of the severe weather, with 25 fatalities reported due to lightning and hailstorms in multiple districts. Nalanda was the hardest-hit area, recording 18 deaths, followed by fatalities in Siwan (2), and one death each in Katihar, Darbhanga, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, and Jehanabad. The state government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the victims. However, opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav criticized the official toll, suggesting that more than 50 people had lost their lives and demanded compensation for affected farmers.

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an "orange alert" for several districts in Bihar, including Patna, Nalanda, and Darbhanga, forecasting continued heavy rainfall for the next two days. In Patna, 42.6 mm of rain was recorded by Thursday evening, causing significant waterlogging in various areas.

In Uttar Pradesh, 22 people died in rain-related incidents across 15 districts. Fatehpur and Azamgarh reported three deaths each, while other fatalities were recorded in Firozabad, Kanpur Dehat, Sitapur, and several other districts. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered swift relief operations and directed the distribution of compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the victims' families. Authorities have also been tasked with assessing crop losses and ensuring safe storage of wheat.

In Jharkhand, heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning caused injuries to four people, including three elderly citizens who suffered burns from lightning strikes. Regions like Dhanbad, Hazaribag, and Koderma experienced crop damage and fallen trees. Daltonganj recorded 31.8 mm of rain, while Ranchi saw 7.6 mm.

Meanwhile, Delhi is expected to experience a reduction in heatwave conditions after the rains. Light showers, thunderstorms, and strong winds are forecasted to bring temporary relief, with no heatwave conditions anticipated for the next six days.
