Suvendu Adhikari Alleges Attack By TMC Workers, Stages Protest Over Law And Order In West Bengal

Political tensions flared once again in West Bengal on Saturday after BJP leader and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari alleged that his convoy was targeted by Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters while he was travelling from Purulia towards Paschim Medinipur. Adhikari claimed the incident unfolded in the presence of police personnel, raising serious questions about law enforcement and political violence in the state.

According to Adhikari, the alleged attack reflects a growing culture of intimidation under the Mamata Banerjee-led government. He accused the ruling party of encouraging violence to silence dissent, stating that such acts stem from fear of public anger and eroding support for the TMC.

Following the incident, the BJP leader marched to the Chandrakona Police Station, where he launched a sit-in protest demanding immediate action against those responsible. In a strong message issued by his office, Adhikari said the episode was not a personal matter but an assault on democratic opposition in Bengal. He asserted that he would continue his protest until concrete steps, including arrests, were taken.

The BJP has pointed out that this is not an isolated incident. Adhikari has previously alleged similar attacks during his visits to different districts. In earlier instances, he claimed his convoy was stopped, black flags were waved, and slogans were raised against him during political tours, including one in north Bengal. The party has repeatedly accused the TMC of fostering an atmosphere where opposition leaders face routine threats and disruptions.

Another major controversy erupted last year when Adhikari alleged that his convoy was attacked while he was en route to religious events in South 24 Parganas. He had then publicly accused a local TMC leader of orchestrating the incident, a charge the ruling party denied, claiming the protests reflected spontaneous public outrage.

The TMC has consistently rejected the BJP’s allegations, maintaining that such confrontations are expressions of public discontent rather than organised attacks. However, the BJP argues that repeated incidents point to a systematic pattern of political violence.
