West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday unveiled a series of major decisions taken during the first cabinet meeting of the newly formed BJP government, signalling a sharp administrative and policy shift in the state after the change in power.
One of the most significant announcements was the approval for transferring land to the Border Security Force (BSF) to speed up fencing work along the India-Bangladesh border. Adhikari said the transfer process would begin immediately and authorities have been instructed to complete it within 45 days.
The Chief Minister described the move as an important step for strengthening border security and improving coordination with central agencies in sensitive frontier regions.
The new Bengal government also announced the implementation of Ayushman Bharat and multiple welfare programmes backed by the Centre, many of which had not been operational in the state earlier. The rollout is expected to expand access to healthcare benefits and strengthen delivery of central schemes across West Bengal.
In another major decision, the cabinet approved a five-year relaxation in the upper age limit for school job applicants. The move fulfils an assurance made during the election campaign and is expected to benefit thousands of aspirants who faced delays in recruitment over recent years.
The cabinet additionally authorised the Chief Secretary to begin coordination for training programmes linked to national and state cadre officers under central administrative frameworks.
Adhikari also announced that the state would move towards implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and related criminal law reforms. He accused the previous administration of delaying adoption of the new legal framework despite constitutional requirements and central directives.
The Chief Minister further stated that instructions related to the upcoming Census process, which he claimed had remained pending earlier, would now be implemented immediately in the state.
The announcements mark the BJP government’s first major governance initiatives after its historic victory in West Bengal, ending over a decade of Trinamool Congress rule.
