Tesla CEO Elon Musk is gearing up to launch the company's retail operations in India by April 2025, starting with imports from its Berlin plant, CNBC-TV18 reported on Wednesday, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The electric vehicle (EV) giant has identified prime locations for its showrooms in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Aerocity in New Delhi. As part of its India entry strategy, Tesla is reportedly considering launching an EV priced under $25,000 (approximately ₹21 lakh) to cater to the growing demand for affordable electric mobility in the country.

Although Tesla has not yet committed to setting up a manufacturing facility in India, it aims to strengthen its ties with local suppliers. According to CNBC-TV18, the company plans to increase component sourcing from Indian original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), with the value expected to surpass $1 billion by 2025.

Musk has previously expressed interest in the Indian market but sought a favorable policy framework, including lower import duties on EVs. The Indian government has been in discussions with Tesla regarding potential incentives for local manufacturing.

Tesla’s entry is expected to intensify competition in India’s EV sector, which is currently led by Tata Motors, MG Motor, and other domestic players. With a growing focus on sustainability and electrification, Tesla’s presence could accelerate EV adoption in the country.
