A fresh political storm has erupted after expressions of support for jailed activist Umar Khalid from the United States triggered sharp reactions from India’s ruling establishment, pushing the debate beyond national borders. The controversy escalated when a group of American lawmakers urged Indian authorities to ensure a speedy and fair legal process for Khalid, prompting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to allege a coordinated international attempt to influence India’s internal affairs.
The BJP has directly linked the developments to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of encouraging or enabling what it describes as an “external narrative” against India. Party leaders argue that the renewed global attention on Khalid’s case is not coincidental but part of a sustained political campaign aimed at questioning India’s legal and security framework.
Fuel was added to the controversy after New York City’s newly sworn-in mayor, Zohran Mamdani, expressed solidarity with Khalid through a personal message that later surfaced on social media. The message, addressed to Khalid in jail, spoke about resilience, empathy and moral strength, and was shared publicly by Khalid’s partner. This gesture was swiftly criticised by the BJP, which accused Mamdani of crossing diplomatic boundaries and commenting on matters that fall squarely within India’s judicial domain.
The BJP also pointed to past interactions between Rahul Gandhi and American lawmakers as evidence of what it calls “international networking against India.” Party spokespersons highlighted Gandhi’s earlier meetings with US legislators, including those who have now formally written to Indian diplomatic authorities seeking bail and judicial relief for Khalid, who was arrested in connection with the 2020 Delhi violence case.
According to BJP leaders, these lawmakers have repeatedly raised concerns about India’s internal policies on global platforms, something the party claims undermines the country’s sovereignty. Senior BJP figures insisted that India’s courts are fully capable of handling sensitive cases independently and do not require “foreign certification.”
The issue has also drawn reactions from allied organisations. The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) condemned Mamdani’s public outreach to Khalid, accusing him of legitimising individuals charged under serious laws. The organisation claimed such actions send a misleading message internationally and hurt India’s image.
Government supporters have closed ranks around the judiciary, asserting that due process is already in motion and that attempts to internationalise the issue are politically motivated. They argue that legal matters involving national security and public order must remain free from external pressure.
