Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday hit out strongly at the Congress party, accusing it of peddling “hallucinatory fake narratives” regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent diplomatic engagement with former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Speaking at a press conference, Puri clarified that while a scheduled in-person meeting between PM Modi and Trump in Calgary, Canada couldn’t take place due to Trump’s sudden return to Washington DC over “ongoing issues,” it was immediately followed by a meaningful 35-minute phone conversation between the two leaders.
“A meeting was scheduled with President Trump, which could not take place in physical format because President Trump had to leave Calgary to return to DC… But the very fact that that was immediately followed up by a 35-minute telephone call, I think we have been given an excellent readout of the meeting. Several objectives were achieved,” Puri said.
He criticised opposition parties, especially the Congress, for spreading misinformation: “Some of my friends in the lie-producing factory constantly turned to ‘there is no invitation,’ and when a productive 35-minute exchange takes place, they resort to an earlier conversation which took place in January and say this is not the readout. Let their readout come... I don’t want to dignify the Congress party's hallucinatory fake narratives.”
Puri added that such baseless claims are an attempt to distract from India’s growing international stature and the constructive outcomes of its diplomatic efforts.
“While the opposition continues to search for ways to show India down, the country keeps moving forward with confidence and global engagement,” he concluded.
