Large parts of Uttar Pradesh were battered by violent dust storms, intense rainfall and lightning strikes over the past 24 hours, leaving more than 100 people dead and dozens injured as emergency teams rushed to restore normalcy across affected districts.
Officials said the severe weather system triggered widespread destruction in several regions, damaging homes, uprooting trees, disrupting electricity supply and affecting transport movement across major routes.
Prayagraj, Bhadohi and Mirzapur Among Worst-Hit Regions
Authorities identified districts in the Prayagraj, Varanasi and Kanpur divisions among the worst affected by the sudden weather disaster.
According to preliminary government figures, Bhadohi recorded the highest number of deaths, followed by Prayagraj, Mirzapur and Fatehpur. Casualties were also reported from districts including Bareilly, Sitapur, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Chandauli and Badaun.
Most deaths were linked to collapsing structures, uprooted trees, wall cave-ins and lightning strikes during the intense storm activity.
Rescue Teams Work Overnight to Restore Services
State disaster response teams, police personnel and local administrations remained deployed throughout the night to clear highways, railway tracks and damaged public infrastructure.
Officials from the Uttar Pradesh Relief and Revenue Department said emergency assistance and compensation procedures had been activated in affected districts.
“District administrations have been instructed to provide immediate relief to affected families and ensure compensation is distributed without delay,” a senior official said.
Residents Recall Panic During Sudden Storm
Residents from several districts described scenes of fear as powerful winds swept through towns and villages within minutes.
People reported roofs being blown away, trees crashing onto roads and prolonged power cuts after electric poles were damaged.
Many families spent the night in temporary shelters or at relatives’ homes after their houses suffered structural damage during the storm.
Rail and Road Traffic Severely Affected
The extreme weather also disrupted transportation across parts of the state.
Railway officials confirmed temporary disruption on important routes after trees fell on overhead electric lines and railway tracks in multiple districts. Several trains were delayed before restoration work was completed.
Road connectivity was also impacted in many areas as fallen trees blocked highways and local roads.
Heatwave Continues in Southern UP
Despite the storms bringing brief relief in some regions, southern districts of the state continued to experience intense heat conditions.
According to meteorological officials, cities such as Banda, Jhansi and Prayagraj remained among the hottest areas in the state, recording temperatures above 43 degrees Celsius.
Weather experts indicated that temperatures could rise again in the coming days after the storm system weakens.
Yogi Adityanath Orders Immediate Relief Measures
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed district administrations to accelerate relief and rescue operations and ensure timely compensation for affected families.
