In the wake of intensified deportation measures, the United States has issued a stern advisory for Indian and other international students studying in the country. The US Embassy in India has cautioned that foreign students who skip classes, drop out, or fail to inform their educational institutions of changes in their study status risk having their visas revoked.

“If you drop out, skip classes, or leave your program of study without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked, and you may lose eligibility for future U.S. visas. Always adhere to the terms of your visa and maintain your student status to avoid any issues,” stated the official announcement shared by the US Embassy.

The advisory comes shortly after a mass deportation drive undertaken earlier this year, which affected several foreign nationals, including a significant number of Indians.

Earlier in the month, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) also issued a similar warning aimed at international students under the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. The ICE notice highlighted that students who fail to report employment within 90 days of starting OPT risk losing their legal status in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

In light of these developments, several colleges across the United States have reportedly advised their international students against traveling abroad to avoid jeopardizing their visa status.

Additionally, the US Embassy had warned Indian immigrants of possible deportation if they overstay. “If you remain in the United States beyond your authorized period of stay, you could be deported and could face a permanent ban on traveling to the United States in the future,” read a separate advisory issued via X.
