Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday confirmed that Vantara, the animal welfare organization at the centre of the Mahadevi (also known as Madhuri) elephant controversy, has agreed to join the state's petition in the Supreme Court seeking the safe return of the elephant to Nandani Math in Kolhapur district.

Fadnavis met senior officials of Vantara in Mumbai for a detailed discussion regarding the issue. Following the meeting, the Chief Minister said Vantara clarified its position, stating that they had acted strictly in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directions and had no independent intention of taking custody of Mahadevi.

“Today in Mumbai, I had a detailed discussion with senior officials of Vantara management. They have assured me that Vantara has decided to join the petition being filed by the Maharashtra Government to safely return Mahadevi the elephant to the Nandani Math. During the discussion, they told me that they only acted in compliance with the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s order, and had no intention of taking custody of Mahadevi the elephant on their own,” said Fadnavis.

Significantly, Vantara also expressed willingness to fully assist the Maharashtra Government in establishing a rehabilitation centre for the elephant near Nandani Math, as per the site selection of the state’s Forest Department.

This development comes amid a growing chorus from local residents, activists, and religious leaders demanding the return of Mahadevi, who has been living at the Nandani Math for years and is considered sacred by the local community.

The controversy began when Mahadevi was recently moved to Vantara’s facility following an earlier court direction, sparking protests and a demand for her return. The state government, now actively supporting the move to bring her back, is seeking to balance legal compliance with local sentiments.

“The priority is Mahadevi’s health and safety. We are committed to ensuring her care, with the support of all stakeholders, including Vantara,” Fadnavis added.
