Protests erupted at Jantar Mantar against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024, with the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, AIMIM, and opposition leaders voicing their concerns. However, Waqf JPC Chairman and BJP MP Jagdambika Pal dismissed the demonstration as a "political protest", asserting that misinformation was being spread about the proposed amendments.
"This is a political protest. The act has not even been introduced yet. We have only submitted our 428-page report. The amendment bill has been brought, and they should speak only after it is passed," Pal said.

Clarifying Misconceptions
Pal refuted claims that the District Magistrate (DM) would gain control over Waqf properties, stating that higher officials like state secretaries or commissioners would oversee any disputes. He accused protestors of misleading the public, asserting that the amendment aimed at prohibiting the sale of Waqf land, ensuring it benefits the poor and underprivileged.
"Nobody is going to take away Waqf lands. If anyone is selling Waqf land, it is people within the Waqf itself. This amendment will prevent such misuse and protect the community's interests," he added.
With tensions rising over the proposed changes, the BJP maintains that the amendment will enhance transparency and accountability in Waqf property management. Meanwhile, opposition groups continue to oppose the bill, setting the stage for an intense political battle.
