Standing at the heart of Trinidad’s democracy, PM Modi paused mid-speech while reading the words engraved on the Speaker’s chair: “From the people of India to the people of Trinidad & Tobago.” The inscription, a gift from India, triggered a heartfelt reflection on the centuries-old connection between the two nations.
“Over 180 years ago, the first group of Indians arrived here after a difficult voyage across the seas. Their journey may have been long, but they built roots that have lasted generations,” said Modi. “Today, the Indian rhythm flows through Trinidad’s culture – from politics to poetry, cricket to commerce.”
The Prime Minister praised the vibrant Indian diaspora for playing a crucial role in shaping the socio-economic and cultural fabric of Trinidad and Tobago. He noted that the partnership between the two democracies has only deepened over time, evolving with mutual respect, shared values, and people-to-people ties.
Modi used the occasion to call for a renewed commitment to parliamentary cooperation and democratic dialogue between the two nations. “Our shared democratic ethos finds reflection in this very Parliament. It is time to strengthen our institutional linkages and legislative exchanges further,” he stated.
He also acknowledged and applauded the strong participation of women in the Trinidadian Parliament, drawing a parallel with India’s landmark decision to reserve 33% of seats for women in both Parliament and State Assemblies. “India is proud to have 1.5 million elected women representatives driving change at the grassroots level. They are the foundation of our inclusive democracy,” he remarked.
