Rahul Gandhi Targets PM Modi Over Economy, Says ‘Economic Storm’ Is Approaching India

Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday intensified his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing the Centre of ignoring mounting economic challenges while focusing on publicity-driven diplomacy during Modi’s ongoing Italy visit.

Addressing party workers in Raebareli, the Congress leader referred to the viral “Melodi” trend linked to Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and alleged that the government was downplaying serious concerns related to inflation, fuel prices and the economy.

“Modi-ji takes toffees for Meloni... The time to cry is coming again,” Gandhi said while attacking the BJP-led government over what he described as worsening economic conditions in the country.

His remarks came as PM Modi continued his diplomatic engagements in Rome, where he recently presented Melody toffees to Meloni during a meeting that quickly gained attention online and revived the popular “Melodi” social media trend.

Rahul Gandhi claimed that India was heading toward a major economic crisis triggered by global instability and domestic policy failures. Referring to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, he warned that disruptions in global oil supply routes could significantly impact fuel prices and the broader economy.

“Now, an economic storm is approaching—one the likes of which India has never seen. The Strait of Hormuz has been shut down. Yet, they claim there is no shortage of petrol,” Gandhi said during the address.

He further accused the government of treating serious issues lightly, saying, “They are eating toffees with Meloni and making videos—acting as if it's all just a joke.”

The Congress MP also renewed allegations that the Modi government had weakened India’s economic structure through policies such as demonetisation and by favouring select industrial groups.

“PM Narendra Modi has sold off India’s economic system. He has handed over the economic system of India to Ambani, Adani and America,” Gandhi alleged, claiming that the Centre would fail to protect ordinary citizens if the economic situation deteriorates further.

Sharpening his political attack, Gandhi also accused the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership of undermining the Constitution and democratic institutions.

Referring to Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Gandhi alleged that the ruling establishment had worked against constitutional values and national interests.
