Samajwadi Chief Akhilesh Yadav Tempts BJP Rebels With Cryptic Monsoon Offer: ‘Sau Lau, Sarkar Bano’

Akhilesh Yadav's strategic move comes at a critical time, highlighting the fissures within the BJP and positioning himself as a catalyst for potential shifts

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday stirred the political pot with a cryptic ‘monsoon offer’ amid ongoing tensions within the Uttar Pradesh unit of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“Monsoon offer: Sau lau, sarkar bano,” Akhilesh Yadav posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. This statement, which translates to “Bring a hundred, form the government,” is widely seen as an invitation to disgruntled BJP members to defect and form a new government.

This isn’t the first time Akhilesh Yadav has extended such an offer. In December 2022, he made a similar proposition to Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, suggesting they bring 100 MLAs and take over the chief minister’s post. “There are two Deputy CMs in the state. Both of them are looking for an opportunity to become CM. We have come to give them an offer, bring 100 MLAs here, we are with you, and become CM whenever you want,” Yadav had said at a rally in Rampur.

The backdrop to Yadav’s latest offer is the reported unrest within the UP BJP following their underwhelming performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections, which left Prime Minister Narendra Modi without a parliamentary majority, reliant on his allies. Keshav Prasad Maurya, an OBC leader and vocal critic of Yogi Adityanath, has fueled speculation with his recent speeches and social media posts.

On Wednesday, Maurya’s office posted on X, “The organisation is bigger than the government, the pain of the workers is my pain. No one is bigger than the organisation, the workers are the pride.” This message, coming shortly after Maurya’s meeting with BJP president JP Nadda in Delhi, is perceived as a subtle dig at Yogi Adityanath.

While the BJP has publicly dismissed any claims of infighting, insisting on a united front, insiders suggest the factionalism runs deeper, involving senior central leaders dissatisfied with the party’s performance in Uttar Pradesh during the Lok Sabha elections.
