In a major development from the education sector, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has withdrawn its newly released Class 8 Social Science textbook after concerns were raised over content in a chapter related to the judiciary. The move comes just days after the book was officially introduced.
The textbook titled Exploring Society: India and Beyond, Vol II was released on February 24, 2026. However, shortly after copies began circulating, certain portions in Chapter 4 — “The Role of Judiciary in Our Society” — were flagged for containing what officials described as “inappropriate textual material” and an “error of judgement.”
Distribution Put on Immediate Hold
Following the concerns, the Department of School Education and Literacy under the Ministry of Education directed that distribution of the textbook be immediately halted until further review. NCERT confirmed that it has complied with the directive and stopped circulation of the book with immediate effect.
Officials clarified that the decision was taken to ensure academic integrity and maintain institutional respect, especially regarding constitutional bodies.
NCERT Issues Public Apology
In an official statement, NCERT expressed regret over the inclusion of the controversial content. The council emphasized that the error was unintentional and reaffirmed its respect for the judiciary, describing it as the guardian of the Constitution and protector of Fundamental Rights.
NCERT stated that it holds the judiciary in the highest regard and clarified that there was no intention to question or undermine any constitutional authority. The council described the issue as a lapse in editorial judgement and assured that corrective steps are being taken.
Chapter to Be Rewritten Before 2026-27 Session
The controversial chapter will now be rewritten in consultation with appropriate authorities. NCERT confirmed that a revised and carefully reviewed version will be made available to students before the start of the 2026–27 academic session.
The council reiterated that the broader objective of the new Social Science curriculum is to strengthen constitutional literacy, promote respect for democratic institutions, and encourage informed civic participation among students.
Focus on Institutional Sanctity
NCERT also highlighted that it follows a continuous review process and remains open to constructive feedback from stakeholders. The current incident, officials said, will lead to stronger internal checks to prevent similar issues in the future.
As the new academic year approaches, the revised edition is expected to undergo additional scrutiny before being reintroduced into classrooms.
