Union Minister Nitin Gadkari strongly criticised attempts to stir controversy over the Marathi language issue in Maharashtra, asserting that such matters are fleeting and lack long-term resonance in public discourse. Speaking at the News18 Rising Bharat Summit, Gadkari addressed recent incidents involving Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers who allegedly assaulted individuals for not speaking Marathi.
Gadkari emphasised that society often gives undue attention to provocations by fringe elements. “We should not give attention to what such a small section of society says. When we highlight these issues, we unintentionally give them more prominence,” he said. Stressing the need to focus on inclusive and constructive dialogue, he added, “These are passing phases. Such issues never sustain for long.”
Touching upon the importance of personal merit, the senior BJP leader stated, “It is our deeds that truly matter, and this belief is now deeply rooted in our society.” He credited the youth and education for pushing the narrative toward social and economic equality, making divisive identity politics increasingly irrelevant.
Gadkari’s remarks appeared to be a subtle rebuke of MNS chief Raj Thackeray, who recently instructed his party workers to enforce the use of Marathi in banks, malls, and housing societies. His call led to reports of confrontations and assaults by MNS cadres.
Following backlash and political outreach, Raj Thackeray has since called off the campaign. He said the initiative had "created sufficient awareness" and directed his workers to cease all aggressive actions. The decision reportedly came after meetings with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Marathi Language Minister Uday Samant.
