Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday made an impassioned appeal to national political parties, urging them to stand together in Parliament to demand the immediate restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing the media in Srinagar, Abdullah revealed that he has written letters to all parties with a significant presence in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. In these letters, he requested their active support in raising the statehood issue in Parliament “with great noise,” so that a bill for the same can be passed in the ongoing session.
“This is not about any one individual, any one party, or any one government,” Abdullah said. “This is a promise made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir — in Parliament, in public meetings, and even before the Supreme Court.”
He stressed that the demand for statehood is not political opportunism, but a constitutional and democratic obligation. “Just as elections were held after the Supreme Court imposed a deadline, we now expect similar urgency when it comes to restoring statehood,” Abdullah added.
The National Conference leader further warned that if the Union Government continues to delay the restoration of statehood, the matter would inevitably return to the judiciary. “If the government does not immediately grant statehood, then it will have to be granted by the court,” he stated firmly.
