Three-Language Policy Withdrawn: NCP-SCP MLA Rohit Pawar Says United Opposition Forced Maharashtra Govt To Reconsider

In the ongoing debate over the controversial three-language policy, NCP-SCP MLA Rohit Pawar has said that overwhelming opposition from political parties, journalists, and social organisations forced the Maharashtra government to roll back its government resolution (GR) mandating compulsory Hindi instruction in primary schools.

Speaking to reporters, Rohit Pawar explained the sequence of resistance that led to the withdrawal. “Many political parties opposed the GR released by the Maharashtra government regarding the three-language policy. Marathi journalists and social organisations were also against to it,” he stated.

Pawar credited this broad-based unity for compelling the government to reverse its decision. “When all of them got united on this matter, it overpowered the government, and finally, the state government decided to withdraw the GR on the three-language policy,” he added.

He clarified that neither he nor the opposition was anti-Hindi. “We are not against the Hindi language. However, we are against the compulsory teaching of Hindi in primary education,” Pawar emphasised, underlining that their concern was about forced imposition rather than the language itself.

The state government’s three-language policy, which proposed making Hindi mandatory alongside Marathi and English in primary schools, had triggered sharp protests from pro-Marathi groups, education activists, and several regional political outfits. Critics argued the policy threatened to dilute Marathi identity and ignored regional linguistic sentiments.
